Gujarat HC stays admission to PG medical courses through NEET
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court on Friday stayed the M S University to conduct the process of admission to the post-graduate medical courses on basis of marks obtained in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) at least till Monday.
Justice C L Soni granted interim stay on admission process in response to a petition filed by a student from Vadodara, Khushbu Prajapati through senior counsel Sudhir Nanavati. She has questioned the state government's decision to give admission to PG medical courses on basis of NEET. The court also made it clear that even if counseling takes place, it would also be subject to the final outcome of this petition. Further hearing is to take place on this issue on Monday.
The petitioner contended before the court that the city of Vadodara has got only one college for PG medical courses, which is attached to the MSU. The admission to PG courses was traditionally given on basis of marks obtained in the MBBS course.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court by its interim order allowed the state governments to declare results of common entrance tests, and permitted them to give admission to students for PG medical courses through common entrance tests conducted by them.
Last week, the state government decided that admission for the PG medical courses should be given on basis of marks obtained in NEET. The senior counsel submitted before the court that the apex court made it very clear in its order that the universities and the state government may grant admission to PG courses on the pattern adopted in the previous year. He further submitted that the medical college in the MSU traditionally gives admission on basis of marks obtained in MBBS course, and the same pattern should be followed this year also.
The petitioner has contended that the state government's decision is contrary to the apex court's directions, and since the MSU has got only one medical college and no common entrance test by the state government was conducted for this, the merit list should be prepared on basis of marks obtained in the MBBS course.
