Entrance results of MBBS, PG medical yet to be declared
MUMBAI: The National Board of Examination (NBE) is likely to declare the post-graduate entrance results for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-PG) "shortly". Two days after the SC verdict lifting the bar on declaring the results of entrance exams for MBBS and PG medical seats, the NBE is yet to announce them. The exams took place between November 23 and December 6, 2012.
"We will come out with the results shortly," said NBE spokesperson, Dr V Gupta.
The state government has now written to the Medical Council of India, asking when the NEET-PG and MBBS entrance results are likely to be announced. Admissions for the all-India quota will take place on the basis of the NEET scores. Government institutes set aside 50% seats for this quota. In Maharashtra, there are 625 PG seats for the all-India quota.
Apart from government institutes, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research will also admit students to eight private institutes—nearly 100 seats—on the basis of the NEET scores. These institutes include S K Somaiya Institute of Medical Research, Kashibai Navle Medical College-Ambegaon, Maharashtra Institute of Medical Education and Research-Talegaon and Maharashtra Institute of Medical Science and Research-Latur, Swatiyog Pratishthan-Sangli, Sanjeevani hospital-Miraj; Sancheti Hospital-Pune and Bombay Hospital.
"There is no clarity on two counts—how will the NBE draw up the state merit list and how will admissions be carried out before May 31?" said a state officer. With regard the state merit list, the government is unclear as to whether a student whose domicile is Maharashtra will be considered or only those candidates who have done their MBBS from the state will be included in the state merit list that will be drawn up by the NBE.
Until now, for admission to PG courses, the state government merely included students who had graduated from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences or from a deemed varsity in the state. Students who, at the MBBS admission stage, got into a college outside the state under the all-India quota were not considered in the state quota. That may change. Also, the state has asked the central body to share the admission schedule for the all-India quota to help chalk out its schedule. "We asked them to move the Supreme Court and seek an extension as the admissions cannot be concluded by May 30," said an officer.
Earlier, the state used to conduct the PG exam in January. The results used to be out in February and admission started in March and went on till May. "We need the MCI or the DGHS to get the admission time extended as we can start only after the all-India round. We cannot crunch a three-month schedule into two weeks," said another officer.
In the Mridul Dhar case, the SC had directed that admission to PG medical courses across India must conclude by May 31.
